LAWRENCE W. NELSON
8-5-1943 - Two Gibson City farm youths, Lawrence W. Nelson, 14 and William Clements, 14, drowned in a rain-swollen dredge ditch in which they were swimming near Gibson City. Friends and relatives found the boys' clothes and horses near the ditch, which had risen 15 feet, and recovered their bodies after they had failed to return to thier homes.
ALTON P. NELSON
Alton P. Nelson, 77, of Kankakee, and formerly of Gibson City, died at 5:48 a.m. yesterday 5-9-1986 at St. Mary's Hospital, Kankakee. His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Lamb Funeral Home, Gibson City, the Rev. Laurence Sunkel officiating. Burial will be in Drummer Twp Cemetery, Gibson City. Visitation will be for one hour before the service Monday at the funeral home. He was born 1-7-1909 at Foosland, a son of Peter and Kirsten Hanson Nelson. He is survived by one son, James Nelson, and several grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, three brothers and four sisters. Mr. Nelson resided in the Kankakee area for 20 years. He had been employed by Manteno State Hospital, retiring in 1974. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Gibson City.
CHARLOTTE I. (DAVIS) NELSON
The funeral of Charlotte I. Nelson, 82, of Gibson City will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lamb Funeral Home, Gibson City, the Rev. Clarence Bangs officiating. Burial will be in Drummer Twp Cemetery, Gibson City. Visitation will be from 5 - 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. She died at 4:50 p.m. Wednesday 8-23-1989 at Gibson Community Hospital, Gibson City. Mrs. Nelson was born 7-22-1907 in Gibson City, a daughter of George and Kathryn Jenson Davis. She married James Glenville Nelson 12-3-1937 in Kentland, Ind. He died 8-1-1953. Survivors include one son, James. W., Gibson City; one daughter, Janet Horton, Hermosa Beach, Ca.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, George W. Davis, Gibson City and Raymond Davis, Rantoul; three sisters, Margaret Trinkle, Kathryn Driedame and Delores Walker, all of Gibson City. She was preceded in death by four brothers and one grandson. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Gibson City, to which memorials may be made.
JENNIE (JESSEN) NELSON
Mrs. Jennie Nelson, 68, was found dead in her home about 8 p.m. Tuesday (no date listed) by her son, Lorens, who became alarmed when she failed to answer his telephone calls. It was decided she had died early in the day. Henry Hanson, coroner, conducted an inquiry and found that death resulted from coronary thrombosis. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday (today) in the Presbyterian Church with Rev. Howard Van Dyke officiating. Burial will be in Gibson City Cemetery. Mrs. Nelson was born 10-12-1877 in Kolding, Denmark, a daughter of Peter and Margaret Jessen. She came to the United States at the age of 16 and lived with a relative, Lars Nelson, near Harpster. She was married to Hans R. Nelson, 3-11-1896 at Paxton and the couple took up residence on a farm north-west of Gibson City. They retired from farming 25 years ago and moved into Gibson City. Mr. Nelson died 1-26-1939. Mrs. Nelson was a member of the Presbyterian Church. She was well known in Gibson City where she was called "Aunt Jennie." She leaves two sons, Soren, and Lorens, of near Gibson City; a niece, Mrs. Marie Stroh, Okarche, OK; three sisters, Mrs. Peter Christainsen, Rankin; Mrs. Siegfred Peterson, Champaign; and Mrs. Johanna Nijhelsen, Copenhagen, Denmark; two brothers, Chris, Lansing, Mich., and Erhardt, of Wisconsin, and seven grandchildren.
GESINA A. (SUNTKEN) NELSON
Gesina A. Nelson, 84, Gibson City, died at 8:35 a.m. yesterday 9-13-1987 at Gibson Manor Nursing Home, Gibson City, where she had been a resident since January. Her funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Lamb Funeral Hme, Gibson City, the Rev. Laurence Sunkel officiating. Burial will be in Drummer Twp Cemetery, Gibson City. Visitation will be from 6 - 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mrs. Nelson was born 12-11-1902 in Anchor, a daughter of August and Johanna Andreae Suntken. She married Soren E. Nelson on November 30, 1921 in Anchor. He died 5-28-1957. Survivors include three daughters, Loretta Morfey, Melvin; Wuanita Riblet, Paxton; and Irene Stickels, Gibson City; a brother, Walter Suntken, Davenport, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. A daughter, a brother, two infant sisters, an infant granddaughter and an infant great-grandson preceded her in death. Mrs. Nelson, a resident of the Gibson City area all her life, was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, to which memorials may be made.
VIRGINIA A. (SUMMERS) NELSON
Virginia A. Nelson, 57, of Gibson City, died at 1 p.m. yesterday 2-20-1985 at her home. Ford County Coroner, Robert Boyce will conduct an inquiry. Death was due to natural causes. Her funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Lamb Funeral Home, Dr. Randall Perry officiating. Burial will be in Drummer Twp Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 - 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, with services by the AmVets Auxiliary and the Ladies of the Moose following. She was born 11-6-1927 at Gibson City, a daughter of Bruce and Grace Brownlee Summers. She married Donald O. Nelson 12-6-1947 at Gibson City and he survives. Also surviving are a sister, Margaret Gregerson, Gibson City; and two nieces and one nephew, all of Gibson City. Her parents and one infant brother preceded her in death. Mrs. Nelson was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Naomi Circle of the Church. She was also a member of the AmVets Auxiliary, Ladies of the Moose and the Southside County Club. Memorials may be made to the church.
GRETCHEN G. (WHEELER) NELSON
Gretchen G. Nelson, 88, of Gibson City died at 9:14 p.m. Saturday 1-15-2000 at Gibson Area Hospital Annex, Gibson City. Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lamb Funeral Home, Gibson City, the Rev. Kathleen Reichmann officiating. Burial will be in Drummer Twp Cemetery, Gibson City. Visitation will be from 5 - 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Gibson Area Hospital Annex or the First Presbyterian Church, Gibson City. Mrs. Nelson was born on 9-27-1911 at Massena, Iowa, a daughter of Mont S. and Edith Heath Wheeler. She married John M. Nelson on 11-11-1939 at Gibson City. He died 2-16-1959. She is survived by three daughters, Debra (Thomas) Scrobel, Muskego, Wis.; Bonnie (Richard) Thomas, Bement; and Betty (Larry) Johnson, Gibson City; one sister, Saxon Murry, Mount Vernon; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and one brother. Mrs. Nelson was a retired secretary from Central Soya in Gibson City. She was a 69-year member of the First Presbyterian Church in Gibson City. She loved her family, the outdoors, the Cubs and WGN.
SHARON L. (HAMMOCK) NEATHERY
The funeral of Sharon L. Hammock-Neathery, 44, of Urbana, formerly of Gibson City, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lamb Funeral Home, Gibson City, the Rev. Charles Neathery officiating. Burial will be in Drummer Twp Cemetery, Gibson City. Visitation will be from 6 - 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. She died at 7:15 a.m. Thursday 5-15-1997 at her mother's home in Urbana. Memorials may be made to an organization of the donor's choice. Survivors include her husband, Charles Neathery; her mother, Helen I. Hammock, Urbana; two daughters, Christy Merritt, DeLand, and Jennifer Neathery, Gibson City; two sons, Wayne Hammock of Texas and Daniel Neathery, Gibson City; four sisters, Marilyn Powell and Jean Skinner, both of Mississippi; Carolyn Hammock of Texas; and Oma Mendenhall, Urbana; two brothers, Warren Hammock of Florida and Jeff Hammock of Texas; and seven grandchildren.
AUSTIN MICHAEL NEATHERY
Austin Michael Neathery, infant son of Jennifer Neathery of Gibson City, died at 8:15 p.m. Thursday 2-6-1997 one hour after his birth at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Drummer Twp Cemetery, the Rev. Charles Neathery officiating. There will be no visitation. Lamb Funeral Home, Gibson City, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the family. Surviving are his mother and maternal grandparents Charles and Sharon Neathery, Gibson City.
JAMES BENNY NETTLETON
James Benny Nettleton, age 47 of rural Foosland, died at 11:25 p.m. Saturday 6-21-1997 at OSF St. James Hospital in Pontiac. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the American Lutheran Church in Gibson City with the Rev. Wayne Shelksohn and the Reverend Dane Meuschke officiating. Burial will be in Drummer Twp Cemetery, Gibson City. Visitation was from 4 - 8 p.m. Tuesday at Lamb Funeral Home in Gibson City. Honorary pallbearers include Doug Woodward, Harry Groom, Dave Celeschi, Gene Everett and Larry Schaefer. Active pallbearers will be Bob Buhs, Gayle Simpsen, Ed Jones, Joe Williams, Doug Roesch and Vinnie Gee. Mr. Nettleton was born 12-16-1949 at Benton Harbor, Michigan a son of Howard Dale and Mary Jo Fentress Nettleton. He married Sylvia Lynn Martin on 6-23-1973 at Gibson City. Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Lynn Nettleton of rural Foosland; two sons, Aaron James Nettleton and Brian Martin Nettleton, both of rural Foosland; his parents, Howard and Jo Nettleton of rural Saybrook; three brothers, Gary Nettleton of rural Saybrook, John Nettleton of Gibson City and Randy Nettleton of rural Saybrook; and his mother and father-in-law, Norvin (Shorty) and Rose Martin of Gibson City. Mr. Nettleton has lived in the rural Gibson City for all of his life. A 1968 graduate of Gibson City High School, he was a 1973 graduate of Illinois State University with the bachelor's degree in agriculture. He was a charter member of the Delta Sigma Phi. Mr. Nettleton was engaged in farming for his entire life. He was a stock car owner and an avid race fan. He was a member of the Gibson City -Melvin - Sibley Booster Club and the American Lutheran Church in Gibson City. Memorials may be made to his church, the GCMS High School FFA or to the Gibson Community Hospital.
LILLIAN J. (FITZPATRICK) NEUZEL
Lillian J. Neuzel, 91, of Mesa, AZ, formerly of Gibson City died at 3:57 a.m. Friday 8-26-1988 at her daughter's home in Mesa. Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Lamb Funeral Home, Gibson City, the Rev. Clarence Bangs officiating. Burial will be in Drummer Twp Cemetery, Gibson City. Visitation will be from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the fuenral home. She was born 7-3-1897 at Guthrie, a daughter of John and Flora Joos Fitzpatrick. She married Joseph Neuzel 5-19-1915 at Chicago. He died 6-14-1958. Survivors include a son, Wayne, Chatsworth; a daughter, Virginia Friese, Mesa, AZ; two sisters, Eva Putnam and Ruby Brown, both of Gibson City; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Neuzel was a resident of Mesa, AZ for 28 years. She was postmistress of Guthrie for many years. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Gibson City. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
WILLIS A. NEWLIN
Willis A. Newlin, 67, veteran grocer of this city, died suddenly at his store Tuesday shortly after 6 p.m. as he was preparing to close his store for the day. Mr. Newlin had complained of not feeling well for several days and on Monday called a physician, who told him that he should stay home from the store for a few days, but he was feeling better Tuesday morning and went to his place of business as usual. He has been in business in this city for about 30 years. He is survived by his widow and one son, Dr. C.N. Newlin, of Peoria. One son, Donald, died about 18 years ago when about 16 years old. b. 8-31-1861 d. 8-6-1929
ELMER L. NICKRENT
The funeral of Elmer L. Nickrent, age 78 of Gibson City was at 1 p.m. Friday at Lamb Funeral Home, Gibson City. The Reverend Patrick W. Cox officiated with burial in Drummer Twp Cemetery, Gibson City. Visitation was from 6 - 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Pallbearers were Everett Wilson, Jr., Robert Nickrent, Mark Hendricks, Larry Richoz, Roy Baird and Ron Goin. Mr. Nickrent died at 1:40 p.m. Tuesday 9-22-1992 at Gibson Manor Nursing Home, Gibson City. He was born 1-21-1914 in Anchor, a son of Leon and Lena Warsaw Nickrent. He married Genevieve Ryan on 5-1-1943 in Gibson City and she survives. Other survivors include one son, Robert of Mackinaw; two daughters, Pat Wilson of Fisher andd Diana Johnson of Foosland; two brothers, Robert of Normal and Roy of Saybrook; three sisters, Ellen Bradd of Bloomington; Mary Necessary of Heyworth; and Velna Adcock of British Columbia; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. Nickrent was raised in the Saybrook area. He worked for Central Soya in Gibson City for 34 years retiring in 1976. He was a member of Quarter Century Club and American Association of Retired Persons. Memorials may be made to Gibson Community Hospital, Gibson City.
INA (ROLAND) NIESWANDER
Mrs. Ina Nieswander, 75, of 204 N. Church, Gibson City, and formerly of Paxton, died at 7 a.m. Tuesday 6-29-1976 at Gibson Community Hospital where she had been a patient four days. Funeral services were set for 2 p.m. Thursday, at the Ford - Baier Funeral Home in Paxton, the Rev. Roger James and Rev. Merle Conklin officiating. Burial will be at Drummer Twp Cemetery in Gibson City. Visitation was to be held from 6 - 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Pallbearers named were Clyde Jones, Leonard Swanson, Ray Blissard, Harold Medler, Paul Currie and Oscar Brown. She was born 3-5-1901 at Lake Village, Ind., a daughter of John and Daisy Roland. She married Rollie J. Nieswander 3-8-1922 at Sibley. He died 12-3-1968. She is survived by two foster sons, Raymond Powers, Norwalk, Calif., and Charles "Ted" Powers, Lynwood, Calif., and several grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers. The Nieswanders farmed near Sibley five years, lived 20 years in Chicago, where Mr. Nieswander was a carpenter, and prior to the moving to Paxton in 1952, lived in Urbana several years. She was a member of the Church of Christ of Paxton and a member of the church's Women's Council. Memorials may be made to the Heart Fund or to the Cancer Fund.
JOHN A. NOBLE
John A. Noble, 77, a life-long resident of the Gibson City area, died at 6:15 p.m. Friday 2-24-1984 at Gibson Community Hospital. His funeral was at 2 p.m. Monday at Gibson City United Methodist Church, the Rev. Mary Kathryn Pearce officiating. Burial was in Drummer Twp Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Frank Hunt, Jr., Stewart Anderson, and Lester Moody. Pallbearers were Paul Sunderland, Delmar Huxtable, John Loveless, E. L. Etherton, Robert Carley, and Douglas Hager. Mr. Noble was born 10-22-1906 at Foosland, a son of William and Effie Smith Noble. He married Janet Flentji 7-4-1941 at Springfield and she survives. Other survivors include two sons, John R. and William, both of Gibson City; a daughter, Mary English of Mundelein; two sisters, Mary Alice Coney, Sun City AZ, and Elizabeth Harper of Hollywood, Ca; and six grandchildren. An infant brother and a sister preceded him in death. Mr. Noble was a past member of the Gibson Community Hospital Board, Gibson City Recreation Board, Gibson City Board of Education, Lions Club, and Gibson Chamber of Commerce. He was a Republican precinct committeeman for many years and was a member of the United Methodist Church of Gibson City. He owned and operated Noble Brothers Seed Co. in Gibson City for many years. Memorials may be made to the church or Gibson Community Hospital.
JANET F. (FLENTJE) NOBLE
Janet F. Noble, 68, of Gibson City, died at 11:50 a.m. yesterday 3-10-1985 at Gibson Community Hospital. Her funeral will be at 3 p.m. today at United Methodist Church, the Rev. Randall Perry officiating. Burial will be in Drummer Twp Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 - 3 p.m. today at the funeral home. She was born 3-9-1917 at Springfield, a daughter of Robert and Susan Johnston Flentje. She married John A. Noble 7-4-1941 at Springfield. He died 2-24-1984. Surviving are two sons, John R. and William, both of Gibson City; a daughter, Mary English, Mundelein; a sister, Edna Mae Levis, Lantana, Fl.; and six grandchildren. A sister preceded her in death. Mrs. Noble had been a resident of Gibson City since 1941. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and Gibson Community Hospital Auxiliary, both in Gibson City. She also was a former member of the William Moyer Library Board and Senior Women's Club, both in Gibson City; and Ford Co. Republican Women. She also had been active in Girl Scouts. Memorials may be made to the library, her church or the hospital.
HELEN I. (PFOFF) FAWVER, NOLAND
Helen I. Noland, 70, a lifelong resident of the Gibson City area, died at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday 12-1-1981 at Cole Hospital in Champaign. Her funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Lamb Funeral Home, the Rev. James B. Bortell officiating. Burial will be in Drummer Twp Cemetery, Gibson City. Pallbearers will be Harvey Noland, Marlo Noland, Bloice Shilts, Eugene Timm, Clair Shull and James Jensen. Visitation will be from 7 - 9 Wednesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Noland was born 9-23-1911 in Elliott, a daughter of Henry and Nellie Jardine Pfoff. She married Lonnie Fawver 5-3-1930 in Gibson City. He died 7-12-1948. She married Joseph Noland 4-28-1953 in Gibson City and he survives. Also surviving are a son, Larry Fawver of Gibson City; four sisters, Thelma Baxter of Urbana, Doris Bonifas of Coldwater, Ohio, Lois Smith of St. Mary's Ohio, and Nita Johnstone of Bloomington; three brothers, Lyle Pfoff of Gibson City; Howard Pfoff of Washington and Dean Pfoff of Paxton; and four grandchildren. A sister preceded her in death. Mrs. Noland was a member of the Elliott United Methodist Church and the Gibson City Community Hospital Auxiliary. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
